First generation of smart taps now available

27 April 2005

The difficulty of estimating correct amounts of chemicals for cleaning the floor of his restaurant led Fresh Innovator Lawrence Sant to invent a new type of tap.

The Metered Dose or Divvy Tap, gives a precise measure of any liquid into a container.

It can be used everywhere from agriculture and industry, to pool maintenance and household cleaning.

Sant perfected the design for the plastic tap with a friend, now his business partner, from the cleaning industry.

They consulted manufacturers and plastics professionals all over the country, attended trade shows and talked to government agencies.

“I wanted this to be simple technology that ordinary people could understand instinctively without an instruction manual,” Sant says. He also found his invention could overcome severe injury from chemical splash and vapour inhalation.

“The Divvy will be extremely valuable to cleaning companies and other firms that rely on mixing raw chemicals before use, such as farmers, restaurant owners and industrial businesses.

“To be really useful, the tap needed to fit a range of container sizes and dispense correctly every time.

The traditional way of measuring chemicals is to pour them into a separate measuring container, then into another to be mixed with water. But with the MDT you ‘cut out the middle man’ and dispense the correct amount of chemical directly into the cleaning bucket”.

To date, Molly Polly Innovations Pty Ltd has taken the Divvy from concept to a patented product made and sold in Australia. Chemical users, both in Australia and abroad, are already showing great interest, particularly as the alternative—very expensive electronic units—only suit about 10 per cent of the market.

Sant’s company, Molly Polly Pty Ltd, has already attracted significant investment from the people of Sant’s home town, Gladstone in Queensland.  Their support will allow Molly Polly to continue to develop new uses for the tap.

Sant sees his invention becoming a must for any homeowner. “No more waste of washing detergent, liquid soap, or even cough mixture,” he said.

Lawrence’s innovation won him a place at Fresh Innovators – a national initiative to bring the work of 16 early career innovators to public attention. Following training in Sydney, the Innovators are talking to the media, schools and business about their ideas.

One of the 16 will win a study tour to the UK, courtesy of the British Council Australia.
